Starting and finishing at Goathland Village Hall, The Falls Half Marathon showcases some of the finest trails and scenery the North York Moors has to offer, combining ancient woodland, flowing singletrack and spectacular views into an unforgettable winter trail race.
Leaving Goathland, the route heads out across the open moorland towards Grosmont, offering sweeping views across the surrounding valleys before turning back to follow the historic railway line towards the enchanting woodland of Beck Hole. From here, runners enter a world of twisting forest trails, hidden streams and ancient woodland as the course winds through one of the most magical corners of the National Park.
The route briefly emerges onto the moors before descending once more into the shelter of the forest, passing the spectacular Mallyan Spout Waterfall, one of the highlights of the course. Surrounded by ancient woodland and the sound of cascading water, this section offers a truly memorable trail-running experience.
A final climb leads runners back onto the moors, where the trail skirts a tranquil tarn and rewards participants with stunning views over Goathland and the surrounding landscape. From here, it's a scenic run back to Goathland Village Hall and a well-earned finish.
Carefully designed with winter conditions in mind, the route maximises time spent on sheltered woodland trails and protected valleys, helping to limit exposure to the elements. The moorland sections are kept to a minimum and are included primarily to showcase the breathtaking scenery, giving runners glimpses of the dramatic landscape surrounding the beautiful forests and valleys they have just travelled through.
With ancient woodland, historic railway paths, spectacular waterfalls, sweeping moorland views and flowing trails, the Falls Half Marathon delivers a challenging, memorable and uniquely atmospheric winter running experience.
